What makes a trickster?

I’ve been wondering this for a while. I keep looking towards a trickster god from a novel, wanting to work with him, but unsure if I could as I am not the pranking type. I don’t pull pranks, or lie without a reason, or anything I immediately…

Well no, it’s not a requirement. And I suppose it’s unclear with such limited context, but the things I listed that I believe make me a trickster ARE just me being me and doing what I feel is right, despite what others say. I’m not trying to be a trickster, this post started as a question and turned into my realization that I already am a trickster.

Though I’m sure everyone is bound to have differing opinions on being a trickster, that is perfectly fine. Great, even. This is mine.

Yep, I getcha. I’m not trying to say that you are trying to be a trickster, but rather that anyone in general who considers themselves a likely trickster shouldn’t worry over whether they’re trickster-y enough. (I’ve seen some people, particularly younger ones, try to mold themselves into a particular archetype. It tends to be awkward and messy.)

What makes a trickster?

I’ve been wondering this for a while. I keep looking towards a trickster god from a novel, wanting to work with him, but unsure if I could as I am not the pranking type. I don’t pull pranks, or lie without a reason, or anything I immediately associate with the word “trickster”. I look at who this god works with in the novel: a silver tongued spy who helps to overthrow a government. I look at myself: not that.

But then I think about this god’s other tricks: making a woman transgender, setting the lower class against the nobility, making crows into men, and I begin to wonder, does being a trickster mean what I thought it meant?

When I genderfuck and feel gorgeous, am I a trickster? When I speak about discrimination to people who don’t want to acknowledge that they’re wrong, am I a trickster? When my mother demands I change my clothes and I refuse, am I a trickster? When I kiss someone my friends disapprove of, am I a trickster? When I lie about where I am so I can go where I’m not really supposed to, am I a trickster?

A trickster or a teenager? How can I know?

When I delight in defying societal norms and what is expected of me, am I a trickster? Can I follow a trickster god just by being myself and not listening when I am told to change? Or perhaps by changing in ways others don’t want me to?

I am inclined to believe that the answer is yes.

I don’t recall any rule stating that you have to be Chaotic Stupid to be a trickster. And consider for the moment that Loki lived with the Aesir for who knows how long - obviously he knows how to function and get along in society when it suits him. I would also like to point out that lying and pranking willy-nilly are not prerequisites for tricksterhood - take a look at Nasreddin Hodja.

I don’t actively worship any trickster deities right now, but I’ve considered myself as a very likely trickster after I read up on the archetype and realized that I’ve been pretty much walking and breathing it since I was a very young child.

It’s also my philosophy that if you try to act like another trickster, then you’re missing the point of being a trickster entirely. Without fail, tricksters march to the beat of their own drums. My notion is that if you’re a trickster, you don’t really need to try to be weird… you just are weird.

I do not want to stereotype but most athiests i have met were gays. Yet they fail to notice that when they engage in sexual activity that goes against procreation they take part in a ritual that worships baal peor.

Yes, it’s ridiculous to equate sex with worship of specific Canaanite deity. That’s not the point. The point is, there’s a lot of this “unknowing worship” buzz going around in certain fundie circles.

One example that immediately comes to mind is the claim that most people who celebrate Halloween are worshiping Satan without even realizing it. Word is, somehow or another, people are supposed to move on from ignorant Satan worship to deliberate Satan worship. Of course, how/when this transition is supposed to take place is never really made clear.

Another claim is that environmentalism is secretly Gaia worship, and that most of those who engage in it are unwittingly taking part in pagan religion. And again, at some point they’re supposed to become aware of it and just embrace it. Why/how is never really explained.

So, what are your thoughts on the claim that accidental/unwitting worship is possible?

So, watching people deal with cultural appropriation and the like here, I’ve noticed a familiar pattern emerging.

The SJW decides to help promote awareness about a situation - which is good! These causes need promoted!
The SJW starts letting a sense of righteousness go to xir head and starts behaving in a cocky, arrogant manner.
This in turn irritates more people than necessary the wrong way, which incites needless flamewars.
The result is that the SJW ends up wasting a lot of time and energy battling these people.
Which means productivity goes down, and the SJW may find it too exhausting to continue on.

Also, on the whole ‘tone-policing’ issue - yeah, people shouldn’t get hooked on your tone and should face on the message you’re trying to convey instead. But here’s the deal - basic human biology isn’t going to change based on what should and shouldn’t be. When faced with something that appears hostile, peoples’ critical thinking skills start diminishing and the ol’ fight-or-flight instincts start kicking in. People cannot think straight when they’re in these states, which means that they’re less able to comprehend the message you’re trying to convey.

Yes, there are going to be people who see hostile tones in everything. Nothing we can really do about these people. But… in my observation, many of us are making things far harder for ourselves than we have to by behaving like cocky, self-righteous assholes.

Just causes do not justify poor technique.
